Week full of activities helping kids become environment conscious
Udaipur & Ghaziabad, 11th February 2016: To be healthy we need to live in a healthy environment. The small changes each one of us can make will add up to big changes which will help make our environment healthier now and in the future. On the path towards achieving the vision of a clean and healthy environment, Sesame Street Preschool in Indirapuram and Raj Nagar and at Hiran Magri, Udaipur celebrated Green Week. The celebrations aimed to help children learn how recycling, reducing wastage, conserving resources and planting trees would help in combating monumental environmental problems and preserving planet earth.
The Green Week included series of activities helping children understand that to sustain life on earth it’s necessary to “GO GREEN”. The week began with kids dressed in green colour discussing with their educators ways to support environmental protection. Educators taught children to practice habits like turning off the water tap when not in use, switching off lights when they leave the room, always throwing waste in the bin and many more. A sapling planting activity was also planned on day one. On the second day kids recited poems and songs based on our theme of environment protection. They also prepared special art & craft pieces with recycled and reused materials like milk cartons, old magazines and newspapers. Day 3 and 4 emphasised on “reduce, reuse and recycle”. Educators shared why it is important to recycle things and the ways to recycle. Kids created door hangers with the message “Turn off the light” which were appreciated by the family members back home. Parents were invited as special guest speakers as they reinforced the concept of recycling waste. Educators prepared a special skit for the children where they enacted ways of protecting mother earth. Green Week was concluded with a trip to the nearby park where kids relished the beauty of nature as they played on the green grounds.
Some environment friendly habits to instill in your child
– Switch off lights when you leave a room
– Sort out the waste material into what can be recycled and what can’t
– Waste material should always go in the dustbin. If you can’t find a bin, take your rubbish and find an appropriate place to discard them
– Plant more trees, they give us oxygen and shade
– Turn off the water tap tightly so that there is no water wasted
Ms Mona Singh, Vice President, Sesame Schoolhouse, shares, “Children are tomorrow’s leaders and need to be equipped for tomorrow’s challenges. We must adequately prepare them for the future they will inherit. This requires a commitment to providing children with environmental education at the early stages so that they grow up becoming wise and environment-friendly human beings. Simple prudent habits like not littering, saving water and electricity, reusing and recycling, when embedded in the early years- a time when the brain’s development is at its peak, usually continue to stay for a lifetime. Sesame Street Preschool has always encouraged holistic learning for children and Green Week is one way of making our young learners conscious of the environment.”
Sesame Street Preschool goes beyond ABCs and 123s to instil the skills of ideation, confidence, communication and collaboration – skills that are needed not just for school but for life. In addition to celebrating Green Week, there are many other ways in which Sesame Street Preschool encourages children to become conscious and caring towards the environment like each class has two separate dustbins- the green one for recyclable waste and the brown one for non-recyclable and children are encouraged to use these regularly. The natural waste collected in the green bin is then used to produce manure. A wall garden is set up at the premises using recycled plastic bottles. Each child plants a sapling in these bottles on the day of his/her admission and maintains these plants as they grow.
The curriculum of Sesame Street Preschool is based on over 45 years of research on how children learn, what engages them, and most importantly what ignites their desire to learn so that it becomes a lifelong habit. To nurture hungry minds, the school brings together highly trained teachers, fun, collaborative projects, and a colourful environment that activates learning- enlivened by the lovable characters of Galli Galli Sim Sim. Sesame Street Preschool aims to change the paradigm in the preschool space by making high-quality education, teaching standards and learning spaces accessible to Indian children.
